Description: | In the 1980s there has been a considerable growth in the activities undertaken by Non-Government Organisations. While on the one hand, NGOs are praised for their innovative approaches to development, on the other hand they are accused of "Piece-meal" and sporadic action. While on the other hand they are praised for 'taking development to the poor', on the other hand there are references to the insidious influences of foreign aid that large number of NGOs get. At a time when the Indian Government has explicitly recognised the role of NGOs in Rural Development and Poverty Allievation, there are allegations of the economic insignificance of the work undertaken by NGOs. As a professional management graduate, who was debating whether to seek a career in Non-Governmental Organisations or in the corporate world, these controversies were very worrying for the author. This project was an attempt to "find out for myself" by him. |
