Description: | Indian banking industry has, off late, gone through a lot of turmoil. The recent merger and acquisition (M&A) announcements have shaken the industry from its inertia and set the ball rolling for growth, both organically and inorganically. Indian banking industry has been under the direct or indirect control of the state after nationalization. This led to breeding of lots of inefficiencies and the financial sector was not in a position to support the reforms in the real sector. Hence reforms under the new economic policy was introduced in the banking sector as part of which licenses were given to 9 new private sector banks. These new private banks were very competitive and in their urge to grow were not averse to mergers and acquisitions. The study looks into the Indian banking industry, its historical performance and understands its structure. lt also looks into regulatory policies governing the industry. Then it critically analyses the three M&A announcements- HDFC Bank and Times Bank, ICICI Bank and Bank of Madurai, UTl Bank and Global Trust Bank- and tries to derive the key merger parameters, applying which it tries to find out M&A opportunities in the SECTOI’. = _ fixefl lg 3 ‘ i We see that Indian banking industry has gone through‘ lots of twists and turns to reach the current stage. However to increased competition the industry is in a state of flux with consolidation taking place. The merger possibility Trixie suggests that the strategic possibility and feasibility of merger between new and old private sector banks,..between two new private sector banks and between SBI an its associates. |
