Abstract: The paper attempts to look at the aspect of health insurance in its intended form and the status in which it is today; it discusses some issues on the design of insurance systems and points out the inherent problems any insurance system would have; it also looks at the evolution and subsequent progress of various health insurance schemes and attempts to explore the reasons for success/failure; it also tries to evaluate the efficacy of private run insurance system on the inherent system defects and popular causes of market failure; nasalization of the case study of National Hospital, Bombay and the means to devise a health insurance scheme and enhance its marketability.
