Abstract: An analysis of the Annual Reports of the Top 150 Companies, as rated by Economic Times, 1975, was done to identify those companies having personnel departments. Further analysis was done on the basis of the industry and sector (public/private) classification. The remuneration of the personnel employees in the 217(2A) category was compared to those in other functional areas, again by industries and sectors. While the public sector had more number of employees, they were paid less than their private sector counterparts. Another finding was that personnel employees were paid as much as if not more than their counterparts in other areas. The variety of designations used, the educational profile of the personnel officers were also studied.
