Abstract: Pirana Landfill (approximately 30 years old) is located in the Narol industrial hub of Ahmedabad. It has a spread of 84 hectares, with the Officially this area lies in the Behrumpura Ward with a tota of Narol there are total of 26,468 units of constructions, including industrial (1,125), commercial (4,215) and residential (42,083).Narol industrial hub consists of nearly 5000 factories and they range from garment, recycling to pharmaceuticals and chemical processing. The dumping area dates back to 1982 however the dwelling units have come into existence in recent years (probably after the massacre of 2002) a) Demographics Most of the inhabitants around Piranana are Gujrati or Non Gujrati migrants 1. Non Gujrati Migrants- Narol being an industrial hub attracts a lot of unskilled labour, especially from the states of UP and Bihar. In fact it roughly attracts 4.5 lakh labour pread waste mountain reaching a height of 200 m. total population of 1,65,731. In this part l labourers every year. These factories and their workers have played a critical role in shaping urban Ahmedabad. The only rent affordable to these workers are available in the vicinity of the landfill and hence despite poor environmental conditions , many workers live in this area. 2. Gujrati Migrants They are a few tribals from different parts of Gujarat attracted by employment opportunities but most of them are survivors of the 2002 riots.
