Abstract: Theatre and India have unbroken ties of over two thousand years. Ancient India produced its own encyclopedic manual on theatre called Natyashastra which guided performances for centuries to come. While the first millennium was characterized predominantly by Sanskrit drama which can be compared to the likes of ancient Greek Theatre and Elizabethan theatre. The submergence of rich ancient Sanskrit drama was followed by an emergence of regional folk and ritualistic theatre.
