Abstract: | On August 09 2018, the state of Kerala was hit by the worst floods in the past 100 years. Within a week (News18.com, 2018), 324 people had lost their lives, and more than 220,000 people were displaced from their homes. Left to their own devices, however, many more would have succumbed to the onslaught of nature (Taylor, 2018) (Padmanabhan, 2018). More recent disasters, in the form of cyclone Fani, the Kerala floods (2019) and the floods in Assam have had similarly devastating effects. |
