Abstract: Education is an important medium of promoting equality and social justice in society at large and schools are the vehicle to provide the experience of equality and social justice in the daily life of children. Recognizing this, Article 21A of the Indian Constitution makes it obligatory for the state to provide free and compulsory education to all children between the ages of 6-14 years. To give effect to this article, the Parliament enacted the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act in 2009, which finally came into force in 2010. The foundation of this act lies in the belief that provision of education is the only way to achieve the values of social justice, democracy, and equality and as such, education is essential for the creation of a fair and equitable society.
