Abstract: | The potential of blockchain technology to transform interactions between governments, businesses, and citizens is immense and unprecedented. While it is often grouped with other technologies like AI or IoT, blockchain technology is unique in its foundational nature. Unlike other technologies that can introduce entirely new services, blockchain has the potential to improve existing processes and unlock new efficiencies and value. In India, governance faces challenges due to its vast scale, diversity, and complexity. Case in point the land record transfer and maintenance mechanism, the CAG and other independent observers report that the current land records management system is outdated and handicapped by a lack of coordination between agencies, delayed record updates, and aspersions on the accuracy of documents. Moreover, India's fragmented landholding structure, where 86%i of the plots belong to small/marginal farmers, further complicates the problem. However, blockchain technology offers a unique opportunity to address these challenges and improve governance. |
