Abstract: | On February 8, 2023, in the tranquil mornings of New Zealand, Kane performed his customary pre-breakfast ritual. With tired eyes and a desire for entertainment, he reached for the remote and turned on the television, anxious to immerse himself in another episode of Outer Banks. On this particular morning, however, they were met with an unanticipated sight: a login screen. Furthermore, to his shock, the credentials of his close friends were not working anymore. A digital barrier had supplanted the comforting familiarity of their Netflix queue, posing an unanticipated obstacle in their pursuit of entertainment. This ostensibly mundane inconvenience signified the beginning of a significant shift in Netflix's cybersecurity strategy. In these remote corners of the streaming universe, a new password policy had emerged, one that sought to reshape the very foundations of how users protected their access to the most popular content provider on the planet. This is the story of Netflix's ambitious and brave foray into the domain of password policies and the far-reaching effects it had on subscribers worldwide. |
