Abstract: The case study deals with the emergence of Maharogi Sewa Samiti as an important institution in the field of leprosy treatment and rehabilitation. Starting with a thumbnail sketch of Baba Amte??the moving spirit behind the institution??the study traces the history of Maharogi Sewa Samiti from a small beginning to the present stage where it not only serves as a model for treatment and rehabilitation of leprosy?afflicted persons and people with other handicaps, but has also started a wide range of activities including treatment and integrated education of tribals, integrated rural development projects, biomass production, renewable energy, water management, low cost housing, etc. The study discusses factors responsible for the growth of Maharogi Sewa Samiti as a unique institution. The role of a dedicated leadership in fostering a shared ideology, constant communication of organizational values, use of slogans, maxims, etc as an inspiring force, high beneficiary orientation, and strong personal commitment are some of the factors.
