Abstract: This note provides a historical background to the development of the cable industry in India. The note is divided into two parts. Part I describes aspects of the power cable industry, while Part II deals with the emerging telecommunication cable sector. Part I describes aspects including product range, manufacturing units, customers, consumption of power cables, export, performance of the industry, manufacturing capabilities of cable units, aspects related to raw materials, government policy influencing the industry, and future demand prospects for power cables. Part II discusses the advent of the high technology communication cables. It includes information on various types of telecommunication cables which have been introduced in the industry, their properties and advantages; an assessment of the market for the telecommunication cables; the current status of the industry; estimated future demand; current production; and the various new companies which are entering the fray. The note also provides financial information on a number of units operating in both sectors.
