The Case of Khanjawala

Abstract

The case deals with inter-group conflicts inherent in a highly differentiated village power structure. It is centred on the village grazing land leased out to low castes (Dalit) in the village, who are dominated by Jats or upper castes. The conflict manifested itself when the two groups (lower and upper castes) clashed violently. Both sought to mobilize support and tried to demonstrate their respective strengths by organising rallies and passing resolutions. But the conflict persisted. The land remained with the Dalits, which prompted the higher castes to unleash violence, with both groups (Dalits and Jats) trying to enhance their respective collective strengths and political clout.
