Abstract: Controversy about the merits and demerits of the goat has been summarized in this case, besides raising issues arising out of the controversy. Some aspects of the social, environmental, and economic reasons for the unprecedented growth in goat population have also been presented.Following a summary of past and current strategies for goat development and estimated generalized costs of and returns from commercial goat rearing, ideas for assessing the feasibilities of major changes in goat management systems have been presented.
