The series of cases present an opportunity to optimize transportation cost of a cement company. On annual turnover of 6 billion (INR), 20% is spent on transportation. There are basically two options for the mode choice (Rail and Road). Broad gauge and metre gauge is an additional complication. Quantity based discounts by Railways is an opportunity to save cost. The case addresses the central issue of how to optimize the transport cost by selecting an appropriate mode.en
