Sengupta1 has described a process control problem in the paper industry in which levels of inputs and process variables are to be fixed in order to meet required specifications of several output characteristics. The permissible range of values for inputs and process variables are predetermined. The output characteristics to be achieved are either specified as a permissible range of values or are of the 'close to' type. The problem, as stated, "is to find a solution in which the input levels and process variables meet all the specifications on output characteristics subject to their constraints and if no such solution exists, then to find the best compromise solution.
