We live in a world where we are driven by our “culture.”Culture can be specific to a family or a country.Cultures can become part of our lives as early as become a part of a family, school, organization or even a friend circle.Every group wants to be known for its unique culture,be it a hostel in an MBA college or a 500000 strong organization. All goes well till these cultures are separated from each other. But when these cultures interact, being as a part of business deals, exchange programs at colleges or an employee goes to the foreign office of the organization; we face issues termed as “culture shock.”Culture shock is primarily evident in the case of foreign visits where language is unknown; weather is different, or food habits are poles apart. When this kind of visit is combined with business prospects, other issues like business styles, working habits etc.come into the picture. In this context, we took India and Europe as our theme, where we looked into various aspects of culture and their impact on the business.Five countries were chosen from Europe namely Germany, Belgium, France, United Kingdom and the Czech Republic.People from these countries who interacted with Indians in business setup and Indians in these countries were interviewed about their experiences with other culture counterparts. This was complemented by a review of academic and professional researches done by acclaimed academicians and industry people. These two were used to understand various intricacies of cross-cultural issues. From there, some important tips were identified which could be used before or during foreign trips. One very important thing to keep in mind is that we need to understand that any two cultures are Evolved from different backgrounds in terms of their history, geographies, wars and economic conditions. And hence, both may,and generally, have different ways to act, react and respond to various situations. And we should be open to the same.
