    Abstract
Under the ideal conditions, textile mills should have only that much of inventory of cloth, which is actually being processed. Therefore objective of the enterprise is to reduce the magnitude of express work in process inventory which is defined as the difference between the total work-in –process inventory and that portion of this inventory which actually understands process. This dissertation identify reasons for building up excess inventory of cloth in grey room, bleaching department, pricing department, dyeing house, finishing department and packaging section. Since the major portion of the entire excess inventory emanates from the grey room, the present study endeavor to find the minimum level of excess inventory to be held in this department for operational and technical reasons, with the help of a simulation model. Inventory in grey room piles up, because it is waiting for completion of lot size and assortment. Inventory which is waiting completion of lot size is minimized by combining sub lots to form a lot. By optimally allocating the looms to beams of various matches of a colored woven product, inventory which is waiting for completion of assortment is reduced. Finally the dissertation has suggested areas for future research in the field.
