Rural banks for rural development - the Indian experiment

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the background and the salient features of the scheme for establishing the RRBs and to evaluate their performance in the short period of their existence. The paper also presents the case for their reorganisation in the light of the experience gained so far to enable them to be more effective in achieving the objectives for which they have been set up.
