With a view to studying the perceived importance of the needs of the different levels of Malaysian Bank managers and comparing them with a mixed group of Indian managers, the authors collected data through ranking of 14 job factors by the Indian and the Malaysian managers and analysed these factors under two categories ? motivators and hygienes, classifying "technically competent" supervisor as a motivator and "considerate and sym pathetic" supervisor as a hygiene. The study, after a detailed examination of various job factors, concludes that the need perceptions do not vary with the level of management and that the Malaysian Bank departmental heads and the Indian middle managers show higher preference for the motivators in comparison to the Malaysian top managers, middle managers and the manage ment trainees.
